Mariano's is a great local Chicago grocery chain and part of Kroger.
Wide selection of grocery products and an excellent to go hot/cold food section.
They have an adequate selection of kombucha as well even carrying a made in Chicago brand named Kombuchade.
Kombuchade Wild Guava was great.

This is a terrible and poorly managed grocery store and the staff could not give an F!!! No baskets, missing prices everywhere, most confusing layout in the world. You’ll wander and wander for loads of extra time seeking items usually located in in obvious places, like baskets. Prices are often higher than Whole Foods. It’s a huge store and yet they won’t have what you need, Ex. Largest grocery bags are 13 gallon. Tons of space is allocated to abandoned checkouts. Check yourself out at an automated station and wait for a surly attendant to help you when the prices of items are not different from the labels you just saw. Items advertised as on sale are not. This store is an exercise in “how thinly can we staff” and collect money.
The worst part is that the exit (not where you entered, which is a one way escalator) is hidden and you’ll feel trapped when you desperately want to leave. The only reason to come here is when you need abrasive cleaning chemicals, cheerios or pulp-free Tropicana for your boyfriend. Or if you want junk-food beyond what the eye can see in expansive isles of grocery store baked goods and frozen pizzas.
I recommend this grocery store to people who love junk food, buying makeup from grocery stores and are looking for a place with AC to get extra steps in.
GOOD. LUCK.

Hard to believe how rude the staff is. Particularly the “manager” with glasses who wears street clothes and no identifiable uniform or name tag. With grocery prices so high, I wish I could take advantage of some of the value that Mariano’s offers. Not worth tolerating their terrible, rude, customer service. I had to leave an entire cart of groceries behind and vow never to return. Awful. Terrible. Horrible. Rude.

I went in today for a quick grocery shop. Been going here for years, love the prices, everything is always fresh, employees are nice and personable. I wanted to give a special thank you to Taj at the self-check lanes, she saw me struggling with doubling the paper bags (which I always do lol), not only did she bag 1, but came back and did another when she saw the bag was full 😊. Then as I'm leaving Shelia offered to watch my bags while I went to the restroom, I don't know if it was good luck or both ladies was just having a good day but I really appreciated the customer service. I've always loved this Marianos but now I'm fan!

Nice store. Like any urban major store, it's up escalators, but the place is confusing to navigate. You get turned around because of how they set it up and have to literally navigate to get to the checkout lane.

Not too busy at 12:30 p.m.
I went for a salad and bought an orchid 😊

This place is a mess. Two stars only because of the convenient location, good hours of operation, and lower prices than the Whole Foods next door. I've reluctantly been going here for over a year (can't stomach the prices at WF), and have had lots of frustrating experiences.
The produce section is by far the worst aspect of this store. They're regularly out of standard items (spinach, berries, spring mix), and when they do have what you want, it's often of poor quality: fuzzy strawberries, bright-green unripened avocados, and wilted lettuce. Whenever I ask an employee, they always seem to be "waiting on a shipment". Not sure how they haven't figured out how to stock their produce section after having been in the neighborhood for years.
The aisles are tight, which is to be expected of a city grocery store, but they inexplicably always have unattended cards with boxes and products just lying around. This is especially problematic when occurring in the produce section, which is both at the entrance of the store and is extra-snug to begin with. I see these unattended carts every single time I visit - last time I counted 7 just in produce. Additionally, their cart return system is easily-overwhelmed and they don't seem to have enough carts to handle peak shopping times, so it can sometimes be tough to get one while there are numerous holding trash or product out in the store.
The check-out lanes are super close to the shopping area and they never seem to have enough open during busy periods, which causes lots of congestion and awkward lines through product aisles. The first several aisles seem to be permanently closed (and often full of trash/boxes), which may have a good reason but looks bad and is frustrating when you're waiting in a long line.
Customer service is also hit-or-miss. While some employees are genuinely nice, many look bored or pissed that you're there. I've seen employees take their frustration out by snapping or yelling at customers who aren't moving fast enough for their liking. Most employees are teenagers (which is to be expected of a grocery store), but many VISIBLY couldn't care less about their jobs, which is awkward as a customer. I also once saw 2 employees openly mocking a customer as she walked away.
It's the closest grocery store to my apartment, so I begrudgingly go there and it's certainly better than getting groceries at 7-11 or something. I'm just baffled by all of the blatant issues, especially during peak shopping hours: uninformed or uninterested staff, cluttered aisles, poor organization, and abandoned carts and trash throughout the store. If I were a manager or worked in operations at this store, I'd be embarrassed.
