Fifty Gorillas

Consistently among the best service I’ve ever found in a NZ restaurant. Waitstaff knock it out of the park every time. Food is a solid, satisfying take on “American” cuisine for a good price. It’s all very good, although if you’re snobby about what constitutes a “true” poutine or “mama’s” chicken and waffles you’ll probably feel the need to call it out for not being “authentic”. And you wouldn’t be wrong. It still hits the spot though, and I somehow doubt you’re gonna hit true-authentic in this hemisphere. Especially not at these prices. The burgers’ beef patties — as far as I can tell — aren’t made in house, but I can still recommend the ‘Ribbed for your Pleasure’ (featuring its own short rib and a little jalapeño) and the ‘Whale of a Time’ (fish burger, not beef).

OK place, nothing stand-out good or bad. There aren't a lot of mains so I've tried most. Chicken/Waffles: Smaller serving size but nice enough, probably not worth the $20 imo, two lone single onion rings too?... Gorilla Steak: Huge portion, definitely worth getting chips and extra sauces if possible (doesn't come with much so gets boring eating a 1kg steak)... Ribs on $20 All you can eat: Pretty good to be honest, came out quickly and included chips/salad with first plate, tender and nice and saucy. Make sure they don't take your cutlery with first plate though... Chicken Parmo: Big size and content, about what you'd expect.

Amazing food. If you have an appetite then this is the place for you. Big portions, if you have kids that love their burgers, I'd suggest you go for the smaller (single pattie) ones as they are more than enough for them. Need to save room for the waffles!!! And the steak....nearly the size of my head. Meat heaven. Can't wait to go back again.
