The Uptown Fox

I am from eastern Colorado and spent a lot of time in Denver which has some very nice restaurants. From my experience of the many times I have been to the Uptown fox it is phenomenal! Once is not enough at this place with the high end food and the wonderful atmosphere it makes for a night to remember wether it be for a date or for a fine dining experience of your own. The lobster bisque is insanely good as well as the pasta! That being said I have yet to have a meal that was a disappointment! Also, I don’t smoke cigars but the cigar lounge seems to be like it would be a very cool atmosphere for anyone looking for a good cigar and a drink! I definitely recommend a stop here!

My husband and I spent our Valentine's there and the staff, food and experience was wonderful. The Fox is the palce to go for that dining experience where they assist you in finding that perfect wine, cocktail and dessert to compliment your meal. I'm not a cigar smoker but my husband is and the Cigar Room was very comfortable to sit and relax with a drink afterwards. Will definitely return.

Spent Valentine’s dinner at The Uptown Fox and had an amazing night. This place is not what you’d expect in Hays or any smaller town. Coming from Louisiana we really get spoiled by high end restaurants and great food. They served perfectly cooked USDA Prime beef, and I assure you that it didn’t disappoint. Literally, cut the filet with my spoon, and it melted in my mouth. The lobster bisque is a must have. Loaded with flavor and lobster it is an event in itself The atmosphere is perfect. Tables and chairs are acclaimed rustic woods, no question had made and beautiful. Everything about this place is high end. The food, the liquor option, the desserts. They have these amazing lounge areas, where we sat to have our dessert. Velvet couches and even blankets to relax and stay comfortable in. Could have stayed here all night. Obviously? They were packed, given the holiday weekend. But drinks and food came out quickly, with just enough time between courses to talk about them and let them settle. We were literally blown away. This is an amazing place with amazing food. It was truly an experience. We talked to numerous couples there that night, and it seemed like everyone was having a wonderful time and a great meal. We set a future date night with one of the couples for a comedy show they are having at the end of the month. I love Hays, but I have to say, that this trip to The Fox made me feel like we had left Hays and made a trip to Vegas or Dallas. It was so unexpected. On our next trip, we plan to spend some time in their cigar lounge. It is so rich and luxurious, just beautiful. Anyway, if you live in Hays, or are just coming through, this is the stop. And regarding pricing, wow!! Could not believe what you get for the money. More than fairly priced for a place like this, and certainly much less than what I’m accustomed to in New Orleans for the same quality. This is the place, thank me later.

I have been looking forward to The Uptown opening for months. I have not been disappointed. The service was wonderful, as I ordered a cocktail that was not on the menu, and the staff immediately accommodated. It is nice to be served to a standard that fits the heart of hospitality-above and beyond. The portion sizing is heavy. The food was well plated. The recipes were perfectly executed. When coming here, the guest is served from start to finish as a true VIP. Upon finishing cocktails and dinner, our desserts were plated and delivered to our private lounge area. Blackberry cheesecake, chocolate cookie al a mode, and carrot cake. The carrot cake gave the recipe from my kitchen a run for its money. Order your desserts to share. All of the food was phenomenal. The cocktails were perfect. The service was phenomenal. This experience was fantastic. Treat yourself and those in your circle by going to The Uptown Fox.

Wow. Let me preface this with I have been to many fine dining experiences before this. I moved out to Kansas from California and was excited to finally hear of a restaurant that should be a nice night out, much different from the usual dining experiences offered in Hays. First things first, the seats are very uncomfortable. I found myself making excuses to stand during dinner so I didn't have to sit the whole time. I am not a big person but I could barely fit on the high table chairs that were offered. Next, on an already limited menu they were out of lobster bisque so we had no choice but to get the salad. My husband ordered his salad dressing and after she left she came back 3 times to keep asking what dressing we ordered and once asked which entrée we each had, then on the third time stopping by, she finally informed us they didn't carry the dressing he wanted and asked him to change it. It took forever for our food to arrive, and our entrées came out before our appetizer which was bruschetta (I had to ask twice for the bruschetta). The entrées we got were chicken parm and shrimp alfredo. There was NO seasoning!? No pepper, no salt. I mean it was like the most generic alfredo and marinara sauce we had ever had. It was so bland. It was like they took a five minute frozen meal from the frozen isle in a grocery store and reheated it and handed it to us...except it would probably have been better because then at least...there...would...have...been some flavoring! The only thing with salt last night was my attitude towards the dishes we recieved. Definently not worth the price we paid for it. The shrimp and chicken were cooked alright though. Finally, we still tried desert. Then after asking us which desert we wanted, informed us the one we wanted they didn't have (jumbo cookie) and they actually only had 3 deserts? Two of which were not even on the desert menu. So we ended up ordering a pastry with bacon and maple syrup on it and it was shaped like a rose. It came to us cold and our waitress forgot our forks. It was hard to chew and cut. It was just...upsetting. The drinks were not very strong either. My moscow mule was like drinking soda, albeit, the flavoring was good. I would not recommend this place to anyone unfortunately. Hays really does need a fine dining place, but this isn't it. I can tell the staff was trying, but we couldn't understand why they were so flustered since they only take people by reservation and there were not a lot of tables to begin with. My husband told me that he could hear waiters and cooks talking in the kitchen like joking around or just having their own conversations (upsetting considering how long it took our food to get to us) and overheard others complaining about their meal so our atmosphere was a little ruined. Again, we can tell that people there were trying which is why I feel bad leaving a review like this, but considering we just spent a lot ($$$) on this meal, I feel obligated to leave an accurate review (this place is very expensive to begin with). I hope things change. This place has a lot of potential and unless some changes are made, it won't reach it.

Had high hopes based on 4.9 rating. Great idea for restaurant, but execution was lacking, especially considering the premium price ($150 out the door for 2). Filet: A (excellent cut of meat, cooked and seasoned to perfection) Grilled asparagus: D (overcooked and stringy) Mashed potatoes: B (fine, nothing special) Manicotti w shrimp scampi: C- (dry and rather bland, perhaps wasn’t fresh?) $9 glass of cab: B+ (big flavor and smooth, although perhaps some cork shavings mixed in) Chocolate cheesecake: B (fine, perhaps a little dry) Service: C- (friendly enough, but not professional/commensurate w the prices) Ambience: A (cool building and nicely restored) I would’ve tried the cigar lounge after our dinner, but they were having trouble w the heater so it was freezing in there. Temp was fine in the restaurant however. Also, hostess said they were “out of a lot of the cigars” so that also dissuaded us. I was debating between giving 2 and 3 stars, but I rounded up because I think they were trying. I’ll try other restaurants next time in town, but sadly won’t return here anytime soon. 12/28 update: after further consideration, decided to downgrade to 2 stars.

This environment was absolutely beautiful. The background music was just right for good conversations with friends. I had crabcakes, shrimp cocktail, and the coconut cheesecake. My food was amazing. My husband enjoyed a huge KC strip. The servers were fantastic, and friendly. I highly suggest choosing the Uptown Fox for a lovely dinner or cocktails with your friends.
