Cafe Matto

Came here with my mum and loved it. Lovely man with the glasses out front welcomed us in with a beaming smile and friendly nature. We ordered the antipasto for starters and I ordered the rib eye steak cooked medium for my main. The steak was cooked to perfection, juicy and tender. The mashed potato was smooth, creamy and well seasoned, the veggies were steamed but not overdone and still had a good bite to them, and the mushroom sauce was so tasty. I can honestly say this was one of the best meals I’ve had since coming out of lockdown. Excellent food and service. Will definitely be coming back and recommending to friends and family.

Rude owner. Coffee was very average and below Melbourne standards. It took them 25 minutes for their waitresses to come and take my order… then rude Owner wants me to leave table as they only allow 20 minutes… I understand how business works but they need to learn to be more polite with customers … you said next time 20 minutes only… NO, there will be no next time…. There’s no shortage of great cafes … perhaps There’s shortage of bad cafes like you …

Came in with my client who has special needs and requires some time to figure out what he wants (take away), I told the women at the front beforehand that I'm a support worker and my client will take some time to figure out what he wants, and once we decide I'll let her know. After a couple minutes she was visibly getting agitated and forgot about what I told her initially, and because we felt pressured, I ordered a coffee type my client didn't want which in turn frustrated my client and started to raise his voice because he was on edge- what does the women do? Tells us to hurry up and make up our minds because she has other people to serve, which is fair enough, but I told her that I'll let her know when we're ready, I didn't tell her to wait for us to decide and then serve the other people there. Anyway, then the male barista told us to "take it outside" because my client was obviously not happy, insinuating that we were about to get into a physical altercation, which was humiliating. Maybe have a big sign on your front window stating "those with mental health issues and Autism are not welcome", because that's exactly how you treated my client. Absolutely disgusting and discriminatory behaviour and lack of compassion and patience.

3.6 Busy cafe on Burgundy Street. Somewhat old fashioned decor here. It’s OK inside though and has a surprisingly spacious outdoor seating area that was lovely to sit in today in the warm autumn sunshine. The cafe draws extra marks for providing ice with the table water. There’s barely been a cafe lately that’s not provided warm water, a pet irritation of mine. My long black here was just ok. Middling at best really. My Greek salad though was quite tasty. It looked basic but it tasted good. The good quality feta was particularly appreciated. Service was lovely throughout here from multiple busy and attentive young servers. Not a bad cafe at all. I’d happily return at any time.
