A fantastic venue, great beer and genuine Aussie tucker! Forget other pretenders, this place has been put together to be truly dinkum. It has three types of Hazy ales (on trend for the land downunder), two types of pies you can pick up and eat (cutlery - why??) and a beer garden with great seating, two TVs and great tunes (is there anything more you need?). Has to be one of the top breweries in the Houston area. And yes - I am probably bias! But where else can you get a beer that references the rough end of a pineapple..!!!

Hands down the best brewery in Houston. Drinks and food come out quick, all of the servers and bartenders are friendly and efficient. Excellent selection of beers, unique and delicious takes on classic bar fare, and shots for those who love to party. If you are from Houston or just visiting, platypus should be on your list.

It was Thursday afternoon; I had just finished the last presentation for the week and had some time to kill before my flight the next day. Platypus Brewing was the closest brewery to my hotel downtown. At only a mile, it would have been a shame to take an Uber. So, I strapped on my walking sandals, grabbed a diet cola, and hit the streets. Intent to take in the sights along the way. Being mid-July, the streets were nuclear. I found myself dancing between pockets of shade. This wasn’t too hard, but once I exited downtown and neared Washington Ave, all shade ceased. My diet cola had long since abandoned me and my 15 min journey became a life and death race against heat exhaustion. Luckily, I made it… but just barely. Upon entering this air-conditioned oasis, disheveled and drenched in sweat, I was greeted by a friendly bar maid who recommended an Ole Chit Mexican lager. (as in Ole Chit its hot outside) She assured me that this was their coldest beer. Indeed, it was sublime and utterly refreshing. The place has an inherently friendly atmosphere with a medium to small interior and a somewhat larger patio. No loud music playing, so it’s easy to converse with friends… or myself in this instance. Platypus Brewing also offers Australian eats. I didn’t sample any as I was focused on hydration, but I did notice more than a few meat pies whizz by. One of the most important, and often overlooked, aspects of a successful brewery is the t-shirt selection. Platypus excels in this arena. Several platypus themed shirts were on hand and all sizes were accounted for. I opted for the same shirt that the bar maid was wearing, as well as a couple stickers. The bathroom was glorious, akin to a cold meat locker with urinals. The theme seemed to be that of a 16th century French Chateau, both in size and appearance. I luxuriated in the quiet ambiance, but alas, it’s hard to order a beer from the men’s room. I finished my experience with a hazy IPA, a 3 Mates I believe, once again, delicious. I caught sight of the owner, a gentleman with an Australian accent, so I can confirm some amount of authenticity. There’s not much to dislike about Platypus Brewing. Great beer, good food options, decent swag, and a gloriously cold restroom, all essentials for a finely tuned brewery. Next, I screwed up my courage for the trek back to the hotel. I knew I’d need every ounce of strength of fortitude to make it back alive. But… just a half mile further was another brewery… and then another. It’s a veritable hotbed of brewery activity in this part of town. So, I took the safe option and marched onward toward another beer.

This is a nice brewery, it’s small but in a great location, where you can go bar hopping. We went there with my wife to watch game 3 of the ALDS Astros vs. the Mariners which turned out to be 18 innings. We were there for approximately 7-8 hours. We had a few beers and ordered some food, my wife got fish and chips and I ordered a pot pie. The food was ok but the beers were pretty good, wish they had more variety but it’s ok. Great atmosphere and the employees were very nice and friendly. I highly recommend this place.

I absolutely loved the flight that I had and the cider. The outdoor space is huge and a perfect place to hang out on a nice day. Three friends and I came to check it out as part of a birthday celebration and loved every minute. The customer service was also amazing which I always truly appreciate.

I've been a few times before 3-4 years back and it wasn't really anything to write home about. I went back this weekend and honestly loved it. I love the set up of the indoor section and the patio is super cute! It's Australian themed so there's Australian dishes. The beers are tasty with my favorite being the Milk Stache stout. Our food came out quickly and tasted extremely fresh. I had the falafel wrap! Parking is great as well with a parking lot behind the brewery. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. We will definitely be going back.

Love the laid back neighborhood feel of this hidden gem of a brewery. It is Australian themed but that doesn’t take away from the local feel. We have been coming here for years and they always have a fresh rotating tap list including the more popular staples in addition to seasonal offerings. They have recently redone their patio and it is very lovely! They have added more seating and an enclosure on the patio to keep it heated on colder days. They have a good happy hour and different offerings on each day ranging from steak to tacos to fish n chips. The potato wedges are my personal favorite. I definitely come here for the beer, but it looks like they have added a cocktail menu for the non beer lovers out there. Definitely a Houston beer staple and if you haven’t checked it out, you’re truly missing out!
