Big Eyes Bakery

My family and I spend a few days in Ludlow, VT from NYC during the pandemic to isolate and enjoy the view of Mountain Okemo. We wanted some baked goods so I looked up good bakeries in the area and Big Eyes came up with great reviews. We went and bought several items since we heard they were so delicious. Well, I don't know who these people are that are raving about this bakery, because it was some of the worst baked goods we ever had. It must be their family and friends who write the reviews. We ordered the blueberry pie (pies are suppose to be their specialty), doughnut muffin, lemon bar and morning glory muffin. First of all, let's put the baked goods aside for a minute. The man who worked there was so unappealing and rude. He had zero personality, he didn't even welcome us, he just stood there like a zombie and when I would ask a question about the pies, he would respond in one abrupt word. I ignored it since we were more interested in the baked goods. The only thing that was decent was the morning glory muffin which was basically like a carrot muffin with no frosting. It was good, not great but compared to the others, it was acceptable. The pie was disgusting. I don't think they used fresh blueberries. The filling was like a blueberry jello with some blueberries thrown in. It was a thick, sticky substance with very little flavor. The crust was very thin which would've been fine if it had any taste. It was obviously made with margarine, not butter. I have sold baked products in NYC so I do know a thing or 2 about baking. The donut muffin tasted like sugar and nothing else. The lemon bar, the lemon was ok but the crust that it was on which should be buttery and delicious again had the same flavor as the pie crust. It was highly disappointing. Then to add insult to injury, I thought I had left my keys on the counter and when I went back, the zombie man with zero personality was there and I asked nicely if he had seen a set of keys that I might have left. He answered "NO." "NO KEYS HERE. NO. NO KEYS." As if I asked did I leave my handgun here. It was just keys and that man needs to work on his manners and his baking. The young girl that was there when I went back was very sweet and well mannered by the way. I don't know how she puts up with that nasty man.

We had the very best experience with Paul and Brigid at Big Eyes Bakery. After they had made a special cake for my dad's 65th birthday (that was a huge hit!), we knew we had to have a cake from the bakery for a special friend's birthday. We had a very unique request - and they were extremely accommodating throughout the whole process. Their creativity and baking skills exceeded all expectations, and everything was done with a smile on their faces! Absolutely go here for any special occasion. The Guinness cake is the best I have ever had - I wish I could have it for every meal. This is truly a Ludlow gem!!
