Smalls Bar

If your own website says you're open 7 days from 5pm, then you should really be open 7 days from 5pm. We tried to go here on a 36 degree evening one Wednesday, because it's well reviewed. We took the train and the tram so we could have a few wines. It was closed. No sign on the door. Fix your website, fix your opening times on Google and I will come here again and amend this review with my experience.

After we said we were open-minded and up for a challenge or speciality, the staff recommended polenta chips and olives. We got the polenta chips and white anchovies. Followed by some Comte and crackers. $16, for two wafer thin slices of cheese, not even a little wedge, but two limp slices . Wine was great. Top-notch drops. The skin-contact Pinot Gris was a wonderful, natural, fresh drop. Had two glasses. Would return for wine alone. Service was friendly but a bit lacklustre. Head and heart definitely wasn't in it. Very close-quarters, so can be noisy. If there's one shouty table the entire bar shakes. Can also hear the staff being reprimanded for serving mistakes. All in all, it has the makings of great hole-in-the-wall bar, but would benefit from some careful fine-tuning and trained staff.
