Le Belvedere

The atmosphere and service in Belvedere are quite good. Sitting on the 20th floor, you get a distant view of the India Gate shining in the colours of the national flag when most of Delhi, except for the shimmering streetlights and headlights of the busy mass of vehicles caught in traffic snarls, has dimmed in the post-business hours of a late weekend evening. But one does not go to dine for the service or the atmosphere. At the risk of sounding cynical, I say that the courtesy of servers worry me. Is politeness rather a polite way of saying that we serve modest food here? The Pad Thai was good as good Pad Thai go. I would not go so far as to pat the Pad Thai maker's back. But the chicken in oyster sauce reeked mostly of soya. Unless soya grows in sea shells by the sea shore, I am not mistaking soya for oyster sauce. Perhaps, there should not be such a thing as chicken in oyster sauce. The disreputable chicken has little to lose but it does harm the oyster's prestige that lends itself so easily to such unimaginative derivatives as sauces.
