Sumi Open Kitchen

We finally found an authentic Japanese Kappo in QLD. We are from Japan and pretty fussy about food we eat, and think it is really hard to find real Japanese food especially in QLD. Most of Japanese Kappo in Australia taste like "Fake Kappo". I understand fusion cuisine but it is sometimes far away from true Japanese taste but this one tastes really authentic for native Japanese like us. Of course, nice hospitality as well. We felt chef's attention-to-details spirit towards to the tastes and ingredients they use, and enjoyed their meal from the start to the end. I read a few bad comments in their review but I believe they never had real Japanese food ,and they should go to fake Kappoes without complaining about decent food. Highly recommended for those who know the real thing.

Unbelievable. I felt like I was on Japan. The flavours of the food are extremely authentic which often handmade in their small venue. Which is not easy. The atmosphere and service were equally exceptionally intimate and authentic. I will be recommending this place to everyone and will try to return every time I'm in Noosa. Well done guys. We had the 6 course ‘trust the chef’ menu and it was incredible! A group of 6 Japanese ladies were already eating when we arrived indicating just how authentic and amazing the food and service are. We also did the Saki pairing and that was also well worth doing - the diversity and variety of Saki flavours is also an experience not to be missed! If you’re in Noosa and floating about on Hastings street - do yourself a favour and come up the hill & experience some wonderful, authentic Japanese food!

There was a bit of a misunderstanding with the dietaries on New Year’s Eve. My partner said that soy sauce was fine as I’m gluten free and accepted the mild gluten free option. On the evening we were informed that there was a tempura dish and the lobster and somen. There were no options to amend the dishes as it was all a set menu. Please be clearer of what mild gluten free means as the staff asked only if soy sauce is fine. I ended up eating a 4 course menu instead of 6 which was fine but I anticipated having 6 courses. Service was great, very knowledgeable with the matching sake.

As Sumi only offers 4-course or 6-course 'trust the chef' menu, we thought we would not be able to eat here. However, when the staff at Eumundi Meats recommended Sumi as the best place to eat in Noosa Junction, we paid attention! We emailed to check if they could cater for our dietary needs (no onion or garlic) and that was fine so we were in! The food was so authentic, I felt like I was back in Japan. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable and eager to make diners feel welcome. It was just a shame that there were a few communication problems. We ordered sake pairing with each course for 1 of us, but it didn't arrive until the 3rd course. Then the main course included leek (which is a type of onion) but it was easily removed so we didn't make a fuss.
