Blue Fin

09/08/16: 4.5 out 5 - This place use to be Blue Fun Sushi, which I never have been. However, having the opportunity to try Nori Sushi, the place has a somewhat modern look. Maybe the place has always had this look, but I can say, the least, it was clean (bathrooms, too). The service was attentive which is a plus compared to many establishments today. The nigiri and the rolls were very tasty. Well worth trying a variety of dishes. I would definitely suggest trying this place once and decide for yourself.

To be honest, I didn't expect much from Blue Fin. They're located in a small little building, easy to miss, right off 82nd. The place was pretty empty when i went as well. However, I ordered the teriyaki steak, and it was probably some of the best steak I've eaten at a non-steak restaurant. The steak was perfectly cooked at medium rare, and the sauce accompanying it was amazing as well. The sushi was decent, but not as good as the steak.

I have been there twice so far. Both times the food was amazing. The price is very fair for what you get in my opinion. The service from the hostess/waitress was terrible the first time. She showed me to a seat and brought me water right away. I sat ready to order for over fifteen minutes (I should have said something verbally) I ended up holding my menu selection in my hand and looking right at her and she still didn't come take it. The chef observed that I was ready and took my order and he handed me my food. The waitress darted around the other side of the small room avoiding filling my glass. It was the same song and dance when it came time to pay. The chef got a tip but not the waitress. There were three other people there and it was noon. The second time I went in I was the only person at 2 p.m. The waitress was very quick to take my order this time. Before my food came she asked if she could close out my ticket because she was going home. I let her and tipped her because that was a huge improvement. This time too the chef handed me my food. He also got a tip. Overall, I will go back but I will continue to look for my favorite place.

This place is too expensive for the amount of food you get! I got a bowl of udon and less than 1/4 of my bowl had udon with pieces of broccoli and carrots. The broth tasted plain, it was no better than i can make it. Needless to say I was still hungry and it costs $10.95 for udon. The only reason I went here was because ooki sushi was closed. I definitely recommend ooki over bluefin. Service was also very unfriendly; there was no greeting when I came in or a thank you when I left. I will not be coming back since there are so many great sushi choices all over Portland!

My boyfriend and I had a Groupon so were pretty psyched to try Bluefin, especially since they are right down the street from our place. The restaurant was dark and pretty sparse on décor but the service was friendly at first. We were seated at tiny table, but should have requested for a booth since there was plenty of available seating. Our server was friendly and even let me make a substitution. However my boyfriend was not given a spoon with his soup. I ordered a salad and rather clumsily ate it with my chop sticks. When the server finally came back to check on us, my boyfriend’s soup was already cold. She very haughtily told us she would have to go wash a spoon since patrons rarely asked for them? She wasn’t very nice, but we were optimistic about our main courses since we had been waiting quite a while and there were only a few other diners there. More disappointment arrived with the food. Our portions were skimpy to say the least. I ordered the Spider roll and was supposed to get 8 pieces. I only got 5 and had to ask for some ginger. My boyfriend ordered some combo, basically a tiny assortment of 4 different items, none of which had any seasoning or flavor. We were ready to leave! The bill was only $23.95 so our Groupon left us with an out of pocket of $3.95 plus gratuities. When our snooty waitress finally came over to pick up the check she let us know they only accept cards for transactions over $10 !!! My boyfriend and I looked at each other stunned. Neither of us carries cash. At that point the waitress made a point of telling us they charge of whopping 50 cents for anything under. It was getting comical, then awkward as the waitress handed my card back to me and walked way? Since I always keep a $20 bill in my car I just ran out and got it. When the waitress returned the check again she left a 1 dollar bill, 2 fives and five, yes that’s right FIVE pennies which went flying everywhere when I opened the book. Uh, was it something I said? I really felt like leaving her the dollar and pennies, but I’m a woman of principle, so I left her a generous $5 (over 20%) tip and decided to leave a poor review instead. Just to re-cap:. The décor is boring. The service is slow and downright insulting. The portions are skimpy and the flavor is blan. Unless you like cheap food and bad service, I would avoid Bluefin.
