Sub Conscious Subs

I’ve never stepped foot inside myself before today as my dad and uncle would pick up lunch for us at work years ago and bring it back to the shop but I’m glad I stopped in on a whim today while taking Hillsborough Street back towards downtown. This place was packed and for good reason. I’m stoked about my sub-$7.00 lunch served with a bit of nostalgia.

Made it in and out really quick for a take-out order! Zero wait when I was there which was nice since I was able to get back home to eat while the food was still warm. I ordered the Reuben which was okay but absolutely needs a bit more meat so you can taste more than the bread. The bread was overwhelming and can still taste it the next day. I'll come back to order the Reuben one more time in the near future then revisit this review for an edit if it turns out to be a better sandwich.

This place has cheap vegetarian food and beer, which alone sets it apart from a lot of restaurants on Hillsboro. As much I want to sing it's praises though, the pizza sub was just kinda bland. Bland white bread, normal pizza sauce, normal mozzerella. I think I'd like the pizza sub a lot better it were more textured, less refined bread, if there were extra virgin olive oil on the bread, or if there were more garlic. The price point is perfect though -- $5 for a small pizza sub.

It really is the bread. My friend introduced me to this place, and she recommended the chicken salad sub, so that's all I've ever gotten! The waffle fries are a fun variation on the traditional fry experience, and these are always crispy, which is neat and unexpected. I also love that they have Cheerwine in the drink fountain. Their sweet tea is also always on point. Parking is great too since the lot is fairly large, especially for Raleigh. I'm glad this place has survived, and I look forward to coming back regularly!
