Mamma J’s should be a 10 star! Absolutely the best restaurant hands down in downtown Richmond. I fly all across the states for work and I must say the soul, love and passion put into this food is on fire! I highly recommend when in the downtown Richmond area that you make it a point to stop by this little spot! Support this small business! My partner and I will be back for sure.

THIS PLACE IS A MUST! THE STAFF IS A1 the FOOD IS AMAZING! And the atmosphere reminds you of mamas kitchen! I had carfish and cabbage with the mac and cheese and tasted the greens! I was literally deink the juice from the greens after! My waitress was the best and i wish i knew her name she made it even more enjoyable if you are in the area its worth every penny and its very AFFORDABLE!!!❤️❤️❤️❤️👍👍👍

Really nice and friendly place. Service is fast and attentive. I went there for dinner, got the catfish, the collard greens, yams, and mac and cheese. The catfish was my favorite. It was so good (and hot) I burnt my toung eating it. I really liked the yams as well. Being from outside of the US, I'm not really sure about the idea of having yams (or sweet potatos) with even more sugar, but they did go well with the food. The collard greens and the mac and cheese were alright, but they could have used a bit more salt. The atmosphere is really nice and laid back, which is nice especially if you're dining solo (as I was).

Some of The best soulfood I have ever had. Catfish was surprising how good it was. Chicken was crispy and juicy. Mac and cheese, greens and sweet potatoes were all delicious. My biggest issue was the service. There were 2 servers and 1 seemed to be on top of things, but my server was too busy talking to the bar tender who was also not doing anything. I had to wave at the bartender to get the servers attention for a refill. We also sat there for 10min with empty plates waiting for the server to come back. I really wanted to try Dessert but the server just brought our bill and walked away.

The food is phenomenal and it is served pretty quickly! Servers are pleasant and attentive. The restaurant is a small space and on a city street so the wait can be long. The smoke from the kitchen burned my eyes so I had to wait outside until my food was ready. If you have a smoke allergy I would definitely order take out but don't miss this down home cooking!

Can I give this place 20 stars !!! Listen... food that takes you back way back 😋 The photos will show you the culinary excellence that's in this business 👏 kudos ! My ribs were so good I used my hands the ENTIRE time and look at those bones pretty ! When your bones look like this at one of those other places, post'em for ME. No Stouffers Mac and Cheese over here real real real cheddar. Those muffins were made with love ❤️ and they didn't need butter, but I slid some on there. The pork chops with gravy and onions 🌰 was seasoned NICE.. flavored, not salty. Okay, so the desserts were just what I needed to add an exclamation point to yummy. They didn't disappoint the bread pudding and the German chocolate cake was homemade! Meaning every bite was pecans and coconut..truly a treat. Make the trip you won't be disappointed! Ohh see Danielle when you come in.

Our food was absolutely delicious! The service from the reception/host to the young man at the bar. Very polite, professional, and fast. Our food was cooked seasoned and we loved it! What’s not seen in our photos are the desserts! Off the chain ( make you want to slap you Mama ) GOOD! Peach Cobbler, Coconut Pineapple Cake! We came back to the ATL with our bellies full of the best food! Thank you so much and we will be back

Recommended to us by our friend, we answered our craving for Southern food by walking over to Mama J’s for lunch. Sharing our meal - we ordered the dark meat fried chicken, the catfish, and brisket entrees. The entrees came with corn bread muffins. For our sides, we ordered the collared greens, candied yams, and mac and cheese. The surprise favourite entrée was the catfish which was breaded and cooked to perfection. The fried chicken was 10/10; seasoned and crispy. Our favourite side was the candied yams. I wish I had the recipe; they were so good. For dessert, we shared the peach cobbler and bread pudding. The bread pudding was my favourite of the two. It came with a wonderful lemon sauce. The staff and service was friendly and attentive. I definitely would recommend Mama J’s to anyone visiting RVA.
