Gianni's Trattoria

An above average "overpriced" experience. I'm not sure how "Italian" the mains are although it was of good quality. It didn't disappoint as they arrived freshly cooked. This restaurant looked like I stepped into an episode of Kitchen Nightmares lol. The decor and playlist was outdated, from the 2000s. Expect to spend more than 300RM for 2 pax here as it's on the high side. We ordered 2 'meat' mains, 2 soups and 1 pizza. The mains were really delicious, meat succulent and it was cooked to perfection. The portion was appropriate given the price. Pumpkin soup was really delectable, very savoury with a tinge of sweetness. The Margherita pizza was disappointing, though the restaurant was nice enough to add more basil for us. The formula of the cheese was very poor, once it hit room temperature the cheese started hardening. It was distasteful with such a hard texture. The cheese wasn't as aromatic either. Poorly executed. I have had better Margherita elsewhere. We skipped the overpriced desserts. The waitresses were really responsive and they serve tap. Taxes apply. They accept cash or visa/MasterCard paywave.

For native JB folks, Gianni’s is among those withstood the test of time. I recall the numerous family celebrations we had here, and the good old Italian food we had in this same dining hall. The bolognese ragu is among the most authentic (or maybe old-schooled) I have ever tried, certainly the best in JB. While at RM80, or RM90+ after tax may seem steep- I must say it isn’t easy to maintain this in JB. After all, most wanting something western could have settled with some “tomato minced beef”. If you truly want the Bolognese Ragu, you should try it here. The calamari though, was slightly disappointing. The freshness and taste hit just the right spot, but the batter is not coated equally. Some of the rings were “naked”; others have their coating clumped together. Overall, Gianni’s serves hearty food but also fond memories. Together with other giants in town like Chez Papa / Rosmarino / Furusato, these restaurants pulled through the pandemic and continue serving the town with top quality cuisine as they have been for the past 10+ years. They may not be as social-media friendly as the newer restaurateurs, but they are certainly extraordinary at getting both your tummy and heart filled.

As always the food is sumptuous and the private area is perfect for a more exclusive event. This restaurant is one of the best restaurants in Johor Bahru for years and always the favourite to go to of expats in the community. I had a totally forgettable insalata, but my petto di pollo with truffle risotto was well cooked and flavorful. No homemade gelato available for dessert so i had to default to cheesecake as plan be, with a handful of blueberries laid on a sugary sauce. Service impersonal and cold, gloomy atmosphere. Did not have wine but the large wine list seems to have only one option by the glass. One for three on the food, and not much to say about the rest of the experience. Where is the joy in returning to dining in ? Not at Gianni's Trattoria.
