Tong Xin Ju Special Shanghai Tim Sum

#01-92 Special Shanghai Tim-Sum 同心居 This stall used to be at the old Margaret Drive Hawker Centre many years ago. This stall specialises in Wo Tie (Pot Stickers) and and Shanghai Rice Cake. Back then when it was helmed by the older gentleman, and was really good. Wanting to try this stall after such a long time, orders were made for the Pot Stickers and the Shanghai rice Cake. Alas, the standards have dropped by a lot since days gone by. The Pot Stickers are not pan fried but deep fried with a thick flour skin. The Shanghai Rice Cake is a wonderful comfort food but it was let down by the use of frozen pork that has been freezer burned and over cooked. General Verdict: Standards have fallen since the younger hawker took over that results in poor quality food Opening Hours: Daily 11:30am-8:30pm (Closed on Monday and Wednesday Queue Situation: Next to none Price: SG$4 and upwards Payment Mode: Cash, Local Internet Banking by QR code or AMEX (Singapore) Pay Items Ordered: 1) Item: Steamed Dumplings 狀元水餃 - 8 pieces per serving - Meat wrapped in a thin skin and then cooked in soup Description: The skin was too thick while the meat tasted bland Verdict: Acceptable, Order only if you want to try Price: SG$4 2) Item: Fried Dumplings 三鮮鍋貼 - 8 pieces per serving, Meat wrapped in dough and supposedly pan fried Description: Upon visual inspection, it is not pot sticker as it claims to be. This dish tasted like the whole dumpling was thrown into the fryer and deep fried resulting in an item tasting like fried dough Verdict: Fail, Don't Waste Time Price: SG$4 3) Item: Shanghai Rice Cake 上海年糕 - Rice cakes cooked in stew Description: A comfort dish that was let down by pork that was overcooked frozen meat Verdict: Acceptable, Order only if you want to try Price: SG$5

Fried dumplings were too salty again... sigh Update as at 9-Apr-2022: Today's fried dumplings are good again - crispy and not too salty, quite similar to the good old days at Margaret Drive again, finally. Thank you! 21-Apr-2022: So sad... dumplings are too salty again tonight, I am so sad... they were so good before😭

Will always head to 同心居for fried dumplings. Have been frequenting them since they were at Margaret Drive Food Centre 30 years ago. The two of us always order the fried dumpling (8pcs for $4) and the pei jing noodles $6. We were greedy today and ordered the steam dumpling too (8pcs for $4). Love their food.

Amazingly great dumplings. I always order the Fried and Steamed ones because I can’t get enough from the tasty food. The service is always very quick and the food you get is just made as the minute you order it. All the staff has always be nice and kind. With a bit a nicer ambient at the food court they would deserve a 6th star. Always happy to visit this place when I am in SG for work.
