Smallcakes Cupcakery

Really friendly staff and cute place but the cupcakes are pretty expensive. They are much bigger cupcakes in comparison to competitor cupcake places in Sioux Falls though. We we not impressed with the lack of selection when we went and our cupcakes did not blow me away. Keep in mind we went later in the day though. Our pup however did love the pupcake we got him. He ate it in two bites! We would try it again but our first impression was not the best!

I just picked up a four pack of Mother’s Day cupcakes and let me tell you, they are absolutely beautiful. I sat and spoke with the owner and she was an absolute gem of a woman. Bubbly and friendly. I could have talked with her all day. This was my first time at SmallCakes and I am proud to say they have definitely earned my business.

After seeing so many delectable looking photos online, I really wanted to like this place, but after taste-testing a cupcake, I can't give it anything but a poor review. I am gluten free, so I tested the GF cupcake. It's extremely dense and much too sweet. The flavor and texture are that of prepackaged baked goods and nothing like homemade. I also asked which ice cream flavors were gluten free, and the lady working was not able to answer. I was met with "the salted caramel is probably safe." Sorry, but I can't eat something that's "probably" safe. There are much better places in Sioux Falls to get sweet treats that ARE safe for those with allergies.

My husband bought me a cupcake for a sweet surprise. It was good but honestly I make just as good or better ones. I was shocked when I found out he spent close to $4 for ONE cupcake! That is totally ridiculous. I would never go to this place with those prices for homemade type cupcakes. They need to step up their game or lower their prices.

We had an appointment for a wedding consult a few months ago. The cupcakes were alright, but they didn't have any papers to take home with us, other than a flavor list. They didn't have their wedding prices online and no one gave us a list. The consultant was using a price packet to answer our questions, and even tried to write some prices out for only what we asked to know about, but for some reason they don't give the couple have a price packet? It was important for us to go through our options by ourselves and we weren't able to do that without prices. I think it would be a good idea to implement that going forward. Compared to other bakeries, they weren't as warm and welcoming, didn't provide transparent pricing, and didn't provide a wide variety of samples for us to try.
