Canton Cafe

4.5/5 or borderline 5/5 because of how often I frequent this place. Their BBQ meats with rice are probably the best I’ve had in Sydney. The meat is always tender and perfectly done. My faves are the salted/special chicken with spring onion oil (sometimes you need to ask for this), the duck and roasted pork. All delicious and comes with a nice refreshing cucumber salad as a side. Bonus points for good afternoon tea specials if you come past 2 or 2:30pm. The other dishes are good too (e.g. baked tomato rice with pork chop) but have had better at other HK diners. The standout here is definitely the roasted meats.

We came here a few times before , but this time the dishes were well below our expectations for the price. The stir fried beef flat noodles was not cooked well ( no wok Hei) and was really thick and chewy. The beef was not seasoned well and not generous. The chicken and creamy egg flat noodle sauce was bland and the chicken was not well cooked or seasoned. The prawn flat noodle was okay but these prawns taste like those cheap frozen prawns and didn't taste good at all. We won't be returning ever again after this.

The foods were alright, the service was terrible. One particular issue we encountered was with the baked pork chop rice. The English menu said, “Baked Pork Chop with Fried Rice” and you can choose “FRESH tomato, creamy white or curry sauce”. The photo they used on their menu has plenty of fresh tomatoes on it and look at what we received? The rice also did not look like fried rice at all. When we raised this issue to the staff, she was very rude about it. “That’s our fried rice. You see there’s egg in it. If you don’t like it, just change your order.”

We had afternoon tea set, roast duck with horfun soup and bbq pork with laksa vermicelli. Ice milk tea was fabulous but the long black had a burnt aftertaste. Roast duck was crispy on the outside but the meat is kinda lack of seasoning. Bbq pork was kinda tough. Will try the roast pork on our next visit.

Canton was one of the most pleasant restaurants in Eastwood, their service is amazing and it felt like home as everybody had called out hello and talked to us, the atmosphere was beautiful and the food tasted delicious, it was like being transported to HK in just one bite 🤞🤞I recommend the curry fish balls and the stone baked rice 🍚💪💪💪🫶 10/10
