Glenn's Cafe

We were there on Thanksgiving Day, which featured a three course meal with two choices for each course. I had the salad: delightful, perfect lettuce, tangy dressing, butternut squash, pumpkin seeds, pomegranate seeds, goat cheese. My husband had the soup: delicious, hot, butternut—maybe just a tiny bit too sweet. I had the acorn squash main course, which sounded good but had *way* too many bell peppers — it’s all I could taste, even when I picked them out; also one squash half was undercooked and I couldn’t get my fork through it. My husband had the redfish, which was deliciously spicy and perfectly cooked. His grits needed seasoning, but were fine eaten with the yummy fish. Dessert was so underwhelming: we both had the apple pie. Fantastic flavors, good pastry, but cold and plain. Could have been a perfect 10 if the slices had been cooked a bit more to slightly brown the pastry, and then served hot with maybe a little whipped cream or caramel sauce or something. Overall, we decided a 6 out of 10. The server was really wonderful and the atmosphere and decor were just lovely. We will definitely go back.

The best part of this brunch was the free splash of champagne. The food itself was surprisingly bad. It looked, sounded, and smelled good, but it turned out to be dry and overcooked. The breakfast potatoes were dry and underseasoned, the burger patty was cooked within an inch of its life, the bacon was past crisp and powdery, and the egg was so cooked the yolk was crumbly. In fact, the ONLY thing that wasn't dry was the croissant which has somehow stolen all the grease from the bacon and burger despite the plate being hot when it arrived. For a $17 breakfast burger I expected more. A McDonald's burger for $17 would have been better value for money. I'm also annoyed you can't substitute the fruit for potatoes even though they are listed as being the same price on the menu. The service and atmosphere were all fine, and our waitress was perfectly nice, which is why it got as many starts as it did.

Food was great but the service can definitely improve. It was no busy at all and food took a while. Love the atmosphere and the decor. Love the nice touch of mailing an Original Glenn’s Cafe postcard for you to love ones. That really added to my experience. I order the soup of the day (beef/potato/ chimichuri) and the Shrimp and grits. I will visit again when in Columbia.
