Murphy's Steakhouse

After a couple of friends raved about this place, I decided a little road trip was in order. Drive from Austin was a bit over an hour, but VERY worth it! Murphy's was amazing! My 8 oz. sirloin was cooked to perfection, seasoned well, and a bigger slab of succulent steak than what I expected. Delicious baked potato, beans, and a good sized dinner salad (fresh, crispy and green) rounded out a wonderful meal. Our young waitress did a great job, checking on us periodically and brewing fresh coffee for us. We were served promptly, no long wait, and everything was clean and attractive. An awesome experience! Hoping to avoid crowds we showed up a bit before dinner time, but by the time we left somewhat after dark the restaurant was filling up. A meal like this could run you much higher elsewhere, and probably wouldn't be as tasty. If you like small-town restaurants in a historic setting, then a trip to Winchester needs to be on your to-do list. Definitely will return soon! Thanks for a great dining experience!

In my search for the Best steakhouse near my residence, I had to try Murphy’s. I had driven by but this week was my first chance to come with my lady. It was an auspicious start to our evening. The hostess seemed aloof. Once seated, we placed our order with a waitress that seemed distracted and fidgety. After a short time, it was apparent to us that our waitress had bailed on us and several other tables. As luck would have it, a lovely lady named Trish picked up the slack on her birthday no less. She and the remaining waitresses really hustled and I credit them for their hard work on a Saturday evening. As far as our food was concerned, happy as a clam! I would highly recommend ordering the 5 piece chicken tenders as an appetizer for the table, especially for the excellent price. Great value! Some of the best tenders I’ve ever had and quite juicy. I had a medium rare ribeye. Was cooked to perfection. I will definitely be back and maybe check out the catfish special. Thank you Trish for saving our experience and probably many others. I highly recommend this place. Come out and support your local businesses and avoid chains!

You would not expect this kind of a "find" in a small unincorporated community in Central Texas. Food and staff were fantastic. Our lunch was their Catfish Luncheon Special. Was initially amused that they had a large dinning area and only 3 tables were occupied. Before we finished lunch, it was packed with locals. Great place to visit.

Not sure what steakhouses people are eating at where they think this one is amazing, but this was extremely disappointing. We came on a rave review from a friend and while I’ll say I like the old country feel of the joint, that’s pretty much where the experience ended. The service was somewhat attentive but not particularly friendly (they were OK) or accommodating. Didn’t know much about “specialty drinks” on their menu, wont let you sub anything on the menu, even for allergies. I got a 12 oz ribeye and I will give them credit, it was larger than 12 oz. I ordered it blue rare. The steak was tough (not tender beef) had sections of hard unchewable fat and was the absolute driest steak I ever had with very little flavor. I get better quality ribeyes at HEB for half the price. Extremely disappointing. Mashed potatoes are classic, pinto beans were decent. I gave it 3 stars because of the countryside location, the old no-frills steakhouse atmosphere inside, and even though my food wasn’t worth the crazy hype, the prices were reasonable.
