Straight Outta Saigon

Booked on a whim and was pleasantly surprised with the quality of food, service and atmosphere. They were busy but made an effort to fit us in, we sat at the bar and the whole team were friends and relaxed. Excellently managed. Food was better than expected and I would highly recommend this place for a meal in the city before a night out or show. Far better than many name restaurants I have been to in the area.

I was staying in the city and Straight Outta Saigon was a two minute walk from where I was staying. After checking the old Googly I saw this place with the 4 + star rating and thought to give it a go. The wait time after ordering in person at the store wasnt too long and the service was good. So, we had two meals to takeaway. Meal one was the Soft shell crab bao with kimchi + spicy mayo x 2. Meal two was the Crispy pork belly with appleslaw + coconut rice ( therice was an extra side) I had the bao and a taste tested a little bit of the slaw + pork belly. All were fresh and delicious, the flavours went well together. I like savoury/sweet combos. It was in eco friendly packaging and the serving size was about the right portion for what you would expect. I thought it was a little pricey for the pork/slaw meal. Even if the rice was included with the meat and slaw, $26 was a bit much for grated apple with a portion of pork belly. Overall, Im a big fan of soft shell crab, so that won out over the pork belly meal cost and the taste of course 🙂

Been here a few times now. WE LOVE IT! Fried Rice with Beef and Stir Fry Diced Beef were amazing.(9/10) Salmon Sashimi was amazing(8/10) Satay chicken skewers were good but not great. (7/10) Would highly recommend booking a table. The ambience, service and food is amazing and the feed me menu price is really good.

Came here after reading the great reviews about the food & having had amazing experiences at similar style restaurants such as hochi mama, hawker hall & hanoi hannah. Unfortunately, this place doesn’t deliver in terms of food & I left very disappointed. We ordered the prawns & salmon sashimi for the entree. The prawns were floury, fishy & hadn’t been deveined. The salmon was grisly & I honestly couldn’t eat it. It was tough and I couldn’t chew through it. For mains we had the beef stir fry & tofu noodles. My partner enjoyed the beef, but the chunks were too chewy, too rare & not tender enough for me. The noodles were ok - the fried tofu was good (the only part of the entire meal I enjoyed), but the sauce was a little too sweet. We also ordered the hanoi style seafood spring rolls. These were disappointingly bland, even the dipping sauce was average. For drinks - I had the Vietnamese iced coffee which tasted like ovaline powder & normal milk. Certainly didn’t taste like coffee. My partner had the kombucha which she said was ok. Really disappointed with this meal, as had high expectations for the food. The service, however, was great. Our waitress, the person bringing out the food, the person who seated us & the person we paid with were all very lovely.

Short staffed, slow service, unorganised! Tiktok popular restaurant we decided to try, we made a booking for dinner on a Sunday night, got there a little early and was hoping we could get seated earlier since there were free tables. We were not greeted at the door, they seem to be extremely short staffed and we had to get seated ourselves. Took awhile to bring out menus to us and even longer for our orders to be taken (around 20 minutes). Food took even longer to be served - waited 30 minutes for our Cokes and Thai Milk Tea (which is very unacceptable) and close to 50 minutes for our food. Very unimpressed as we were very hungry and did not think we would be waiting this long. Ordered a Crispy Eggplant Bao and a Tofu Bao, Flat Rice Noodles with Beef, Vietnamese Curry, Sweet & Spicy Pork, Jasmine Rice and Thai Milk Tea Overall food was pretty average, nothing outstanding. Do want to point out that the supposed crispy eggplant in the bao was very soggy, poorly executed - not at all crispy, but the tofu bao was good. The Flat Rice Noodles were too sweet for a “dinner dish” if you wish. it felt more like eating a dessert. Curry was ok only, not that flavourful and the vegan duck was the most average mock meat i’ve had. Was definitely expecting more from this well know and well liked restaurant. Thai Milk Tea was so sweet, overly sweet even but the thai milk tea flavour was good! Overall poor experience, unorganised and under staffed. Really do wish they would do something about this as we had to ask on multiple occasions how long more are dishes going to take, no compensation was made despite our complaints! 📸 Crispy Eggplant Bao and Tofu Bao, Flat Rice Noodles with Beef, Thai Milk Tea

Had a great experience tonight and was served by Emily. She was so honest about meal sizes, best sellers/popular dishes and recommendations. She really made us feel welcome and made sure we were taken care of. Would 100% recommend and come back. The get dishy with me deal is such good value and was a great way to try things on the menu!!
