Fowl Play

This place is terrific. Quality menu, both comforting and adventurous. The food is truly excellent. I was brought in with the promise from another review of the best buffalo chicken sandwich (The Hot Mess) in the Western starts, and it did not disappoint. The ambiance is very roadside, but in a nice way. The team at the restaurant was welcoming and worked hard to produce a great meal. Great Place!!!

I drove by and made a quick stop...best decision I made. The owner greeted me with a friendly "hello", asked if I had been there before. This is my first time. She walked me thru the menu to help familiarize myself and was a great help. I thought, "chicken is chicken. But this was The Best Chicken I had. Crisp outside, tender and not dry at all inside. The flavor's were abundant, radiant, and danced on my palate. My brain smiled. I had a quarter chicken with the sweet dry rub. I'll give this place, on El Camino, a super recommendation! The quality and service was great. Thanks Fowl Play for the best service and lunch.

Yeah this place reminds me of my old high school cafeteria. It's just a chicken patty on a fancy bun. Nothing to brag about. To be completely honest, it wasn't worth the $12.50 I paid on Doordash even though their website menu price says $9.50. So yeah I won't be ordering from here again. Maybe if they served real whole chicken breast then yeah I'll reconsider, but seriously chicken patties? Come on even major fast food chains have better chicken meat quality than Fowl Play.... Not worth the price. No sides included. What a shame. If you like chicken patties then I guess this place is for you. Other than that, it's not the real deal.

Only a couple thoughts after my first visit. Having grown up on homemade fried chicken with mashed potatoes and pan gravy, I admittedly and proudly consider myself a "spud snob". More butter and some cream or milk for even creamer smashed potatoes would make a big difference. I LOVE that they leave the skin on the potatoes and that there are chunks of potato. Maybe offer country/cream gravy? The brown gravy is ok but a really good country/cream gravy would knock it out of the park. Beyond that? Great food and great service. Try the Hot Mess! You won't regret it. Will definitely be back.

I had hoped for this place. After all, I am from the south and I need me some finger lickin' good fried chicken. Unfortunately, it was disappointing. I ordered a four piece meal with cole slaw to go. The batter was not what I was expecting at all...remember the Progresso breadcrumb mix? Yes it tasted like that. The chicken pieces were big and dry -- the kind you get at Safeway. The cole slaw was forgettable as well, nothing to write home about. The only reason I give this place two stars is because of the courteousness and friendliness of the staff. They stayed open after the business hours and offered a couple extra wings....The wings needed some plucking though. Eck. Not recommended.
