Barley Mill Pub

A pub dedicated to the Grateful Dead, and the first McMenamins' establishment! In June, 2023 it celebrated its 40th anniversary. The pub that began the success of the McMenamins chain. Fun ambiance, fascinating decor (pay attention to the neon art), and Kölsh on tap, who could ask for more? Attentive service, both vegan and vegetarian options on the menu, make this a fun stop for most any occasion. Just for kicks, try the "Scooby Snacks," too. I am reminded that the Green Goddess is truly worth your time.

Staffing issues contribute highly to the slow service. I was in with a group of four on a Saturday night a few weeks ago. Alex was the only waitstaff and Dom was the only cook. THEY TOOK CARE OF THE WHOLE PLACE! They WERE GREAT and did an unbelievable job with a good attitude—even though they had NO support. I put ONE STAR for atmosphere because I would not want to work in that unsupportive environment. I'm not sure how/why management allows such a thing for such a great local chain.

A nice McMenamins Hawthorne hide away - the Barley Mill is decorated to the max. It’s bigger than you think - 3 sections with one that opens a garage style door to outside during nice weather, a more traditional restaurant dining room, and an arcade section. They were short staffed on our most recent visit but service was still good, food even better. The menu is fairly limited compared to some of the bigger mcmenamins but the quality is great. The bathroom has a black light disco ball vibe going on - so don’t trip and go in there or you’ll never come out. Great decor with all sorts of fun stuff to look at.
