Siglap Killiney Kopitiam

Our regular breakfast place in Siglap. My family and I patronized this place for years. It is situated along Upper East Road and is near the Soy Eu Tuay coffee shop. The customer service is below average but you need to be realistic. They are known for their toast and kaya. It is not fine dining. There used to be male cashier who is very rude but he has been missing off late. The place is minimalist in decorations. I had the toast set and changed the drink to Milo Kosong. The food is good. My wife had the fried bee hoon and it came out right with the wok hei. The tea is also good. This is a place to go for some decent food at a reasonable price. It is the work horse for meals.

Let’s face it - not all branches of popular F&B brands are created equal. We for one, consider the Killiney Kopitiam in Siglap to be the best for food amongst those we have visited. The fried noodles at this outlet are especially well done and consistently so. I find they even beat many of the “zi char” and hawker stalls’ to be honest. Sometime this week, we had dropped by for the Beef Hor Fun ($8.50) and Hainanese Fried Bee Hoon ($7.50). Both heaved with such intense “wok hei” and were so flavourful, I felt compelled to ask the young lady who took our order for the name of the cook responsible, so I could convey my appreciation (his name’s Ah Xiang). So if you fancy the “wet” style of beef stirfried with broad ribbons of rice noodles, I reckon the one here is a must-try. Not only is there a generous serving of meat (sliced thin to omit reliance on tenderiser), the fragrant preserved black bean-full gravy which is loaded with garlic, is the kicker. T.H. always gets the Hainanese Fried Bee Hoon and tops it with a fried egg. I like the dish very much too but these days, it is the Beef Hor Fun that’s the apple of my eye.

Most authentic coffee and local dishes . I love the take home packs (which got to bring overseas). Busy place but quick service. The kaya toast was a tad dry the day I tired but I heard the mee rebus iis delicious . Some of the Popular dishes (chee cheung fun and otak) do sell out so worth to drop by early .

This place used to be good. But lately, the service and food quality is rather poor. The Hainanese Bee Hoon that i used to eat had always served 2 big prawns. For this price, i would expect the prawns to be consistent. However, today you get less for what you pay for. (See photo - where there is one small prawn or more like a shrimp, instead of a normal prawn). What surprises me is that they cleverly hide this under the bee hoon when you collect the food. There is this notion that the cook is embarrassed to give you this shrimp but yet, they want to maintain to give the 2 prawns as depicted in the photos. All in all, i think the owners need to reconsider whether they want to continue to be trustworthy, and whether they want to maintain the reputation as an old cafe which serves good food, or they want to run this place with just “profit” in mind…The choice is theirs, but as an old faithful customer, i would advise them to maintain their standards or else they will end up like those Killiney outlets that have to close down due to market forces.
